Fly Fishing in the Charlottesville Area

Just across the road from The Inn at Sugar Hollow Farm flows the Moormans River, a picturesque mountain stream with tumbling rapids and still pools. The river runs down out of The Shenandoah National Park before joining the Mechums River to form the south fork of the Rivanna River.

The best fishing seasons are around April and October, or whenever there has been adequate rainfall and the trees are relatively dormant, so that the cold spring water is flowing nicely in the river.

Starting from the Top - North Fork of the Moormans

North Fork Headwaters - Shenandoah National Park

To reach The North Fork of the Moormans, drive about 3 miles past our bed and breakfast and park just past the Sugar Hollow Reservoir. The North Fork of the Moormans River offers excellent native brook trout fishing in its headwaters. Hike up past all of the families with their dogs and kids, fording the river 3 times to find the good fishing.

The section of stream within the Shenandoah National Park is open to angling as a catch and release fishery with single point hook artificial lures only. No bait may be in possession while fishing these waters and all trout caught must be immediately released unharmed.

North Fork Lower Section
Below the Shenandoah National Park Boundary to the Reservoir

Downstream of the Shenandoah National Park boundary the North Fork is stocked with brown trout and is managed as a put and take trout fishery by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries until it empties into Sugar Hollow Reservoir. Anglers wishing to fish the put and take section are required to have a trout license in addition to a general fishing license. No lure or bait restrictions are in place on the stocked portion of stream.

Below the Sugar Hollow Dam

Just Below the Dam - Trout Unlimited

The 3/4 mile section just below the dam is a special regulation area that is stocked by the Thomas Jefferson chapter of Trout Unlimited. This section is a fly fishing only catch and release fishery for trout. In order to fish this section, pick up a yearly pass at Albemarle Angler located in the Barracks Rd shopping center in Charlottesville.
