First of all, it is pronounced "cro-ZAY", it's French! The town was named after this Claudius.
So you've booked your stay with us in Crozet, Virginia! Congratulations! Now what? Is there anything to do out here or do you need to drive back into Charlottesville for fun? Many of our guests do enjoy Charlottesville, the downtown historic pedestrian mall, UVa, Monticello, all there is to offer in "town", but a real local experience can be found out here on the west side also!
Outdoors: Drive up Sugar Hollow Road to the Dam & Reservoir and then hike into the Shenandoah National Park along the Moormans River North Fork Trail to the waterfall, or along the South Fork Trail to the Blue Hole for a swim, or see my previous guide on fly fishing in the Moormans River! Better yet, schedule a horse back ride with Indian Summer Guide Service through a forest preserve or right on some winery grounds.
Beer & Wine: Try a local craft brew at Starr Hill Brewery (now) or Pro Re Nata Brewery (opening this fall) both in Crozet. Enjoy fermented grapes at one of many wineries that are on our local cluster, including Stinson Vineyards (the views!), Grace Estate Winery (under the big oak trees!) , Mountfair Winery (great red blends!), White Hall Vineyards (tour the operation!), King Family Vineyards (polo grounds!), Knight's Gambit Vineyard, or Pollak Vineyards. Check ahead to see if any of the wineries are having an after hours (6pm - 9pm) festivities with a food truck and band.
Restaurants & Cafes: Crozet also offers excellent dining experiences at such locations as Three Notch'd Grill (casual upscale), Fardowners Pub (craft beer experts), Crozet Pizza Pourhouse (amazing pizza), Restoration (best outdoor seating), and this fall, the new hot location for raw oysters, Public Fish & Oyster in the Old Trail section of Crozet. For a little lunch check out Green House Coffee (cozy!)and for best little coffeehouse, Mudhouse Coffee or Grit Cafe. If you need a great deli sandwich, salad or supplies for a winery picnic, you best bet is Greenwood Gourmet Grocery!
All of this is within 20 minutes of Crozet, Virginia. If you have exhausted these great ideas, you can always head on down Nelson 151 to Blue Mountain Brewery, Wild Wolf Brewery, Bold Rock Hard Cidery, Silverback Distillery, and Devils Backbone Brewery. The breweries all have great restaurants as well along this route! If you are going out this way I recommend the Humpback Rocks hike, rigorous but the views are spectacular at the top!
